Mission Statement

Established in 1993, Tesfa in Los Angeles extends a helping hand to destitute Ethiopians by providing a holistic approach to lift them out of poverty one family and one community at a time. We strive to empower those less fortunate by creating opportunities to overcome dependencies transforming lives for a hopeful, productive future.

Tesfa in Los Angeles was founded by caring Ethiopian women to address abject poverty in their home country. In the last thirty years, Ethiopia has been plagued by cycles of drought, famine, and civil unrest that has left large portions of the population in desparate conditions. The magnitude and intensity of the problems Ethiopia faces is overwhelming and beyond the scope of a single organization. However, it is the belief of the members of Tesfa in Los Angeles that individuals can make a difference in people's lives.
During the last 14 years Tesfa has touched the lives of over 3,000 people in the capital city of Addis Abeba and a rural village.

SUPPORT US

Over the years we have learned that our supporters trust us because we provide maximum return on their investment. They also appreciate the way we focus on long-term, understanding that true results may not be felt for several years. To date, Tesfa has sent over $236,000 to fund rehabilitation projects in Ethiopia. Thank you, our supporters, for your constant assistance and for believing in what we are doing.
Every year, we work hard to raise funds to meet our annual budget requirements. We rely on your donations today to sustain our programs and continue to grow. The generosity of friends like you gives us hope and encouragement, and lets us know that good people are behind our efforts to create a better tomorrow.

Projects

Hope is what the founding members wanted to bring to the lives of disadvantaged families and communities. The initial project involved gathering clothes and shipping it to the needy in Ethiopia. In the process, they realized that this had no lasting effect in combating the vicious cycle of poverty and dependency. The women of Tesfa refined the method that launched the organization by developing effective programs. Finally, they came up with a simple formula to help them implement their vision without a lot of bureaucracy and a little capital, one family at a time.

After nine years of successfully helping destitute families, Tesfa in LA expanded its programs in Addis Ababa to address the extensive need of abject poverty of the urban poor. The following programs were developed:

      • Sponsoring of orphan children
      • Sponsoring women afflicted with HIV/AIDS
      • Assisting families to venture into entrpreneurial activities
      • Partnership with Meheret Foundation, and offering courses in Home Economics
